Cherries originally grew in the regions of Asia Minor, from where they reached Europe already in the 1st century BC. n. l. They belong to drupes and their pulp is made up of up to 80% water and fruit sugars. It serves as a rich source of minerals and vitamins, magnesium, iodine, silicon, iron, zinc, phosphorus, calcium and potassium. Cherries contain important pigments that experts call anthocyanins. Like other plant pigments, anthocyanins are also antioxidants in nature and have the ability to protect blood vessels and the heart from damage.
